Tool Making
W/Tim Lazure
Saturday & Sunday, April 24th & 25th, 2010

As metalsmiths and artists we encounter many situations where the need for a perfect tool is essential. Often times, the tools we have just don’t do the job right, or that perfect tool for the job just doesn’t seem to exist.  In this workshop, we will begin to learn either how to fashion tools or improve or customize existing tools. Tim Lazure will cover how to make a variety of tools for addressing your creative endeavors, including chasing tools, scribes, center punches, stone setting tools, scrapers, in addition to a few others.  Tim will also talk about the ergonomics of a studio environment, and its importance as it relates to efficiency and functionality when working with tools and material.

Tuition: $140
(Scholarships are available)

Wildlife Photography
W/Mike Dunn and Juan Pons
January 22, 23rd & 24th, 2010
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

This fabulous duo is back by popular demand!

Description – Learn how to improve your nature photography skills in a landscape rich in wildness and wildlife – Pocosin Lakes and Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuges. Lake Mattamuskeet is renowned as a winter waterfowl haven and Pungo Lake has been called the “Yellowstone of the East” for its abundance of wildlife from thousands of overwintering tundra swans and snow geese to black bears and red wolves. Our time in the field will give you tips on where to go and what to do to see and photograph wildlife, natural landscapes and macrophotography subjects.

Regardless of your skill level, this seminar is a great way to take your photography a significant step further while learning about the incredible natural diversity of this wild region of the state. For nature photographers, the ideal learning environment is in the field and this workshop will have early morning and late afternoon field trips along with classroom tips and critique sessions. We will discuss equipment, photographic subjects, as well as techniques and will help you achieve a new way of looking at the natural world.

The workshop instructors have years of experience in photography and natural history instruction. They are the ideal combination for a nature photography course – Juan Pons is a photographer that enjoys nature. Mike Dunn is a naturalist that enjoys photography. Together, they will provide you with an unforgettable photographic experience in one of the most spectacular natural settings on the East Coast.

Supplies/Equipment to Bring:

  • The use of digital cameras is highly encouraged in order to review and provide feedback (but film cameras are acceptable); tripod and flash recommended.
  • SLR’s (cameras with interchangeable lenses) are preferred with wide angle, macro, and telephoto lenses.
  • Digital pocket cameras with manual controls and at least a 100mm zoom are also acceptable. This is a good opportunity to learn how to use your new holiday camera!
  • Laptop for review sessions.
  • Neutral colored clothing (to blend in with surroundings & not startle wildlife) suitable for cold and variable weather.
  • Car-pooling to the field sites using willing participant vehicles may be necessary depending on enrollment.
NOTE – this workshop will involve two early morning departures and late returns for sunrise and sunset wildlife photography opportunities (weather permitting).

Tuition: $175

Tin Nichos
Metals/Jewelry
W/Marlene True
Saturday & Sunday, October 3rd & 4th, 2009
9:00am-4:00pm

Throughout the world shrines are made to hold sacred images and objects.  In Latin America nichos are a special type of shrine, often made using recycled tin, to exhibit a diverse range of objects and images including popular cultural icons. We will alter and use tin containers as a foundation from which to create our own unique nichos, along with removable, wearable, jewelry or objects.  We will focus on fabrication and soldering techniques for tin and iron wire, hydraulic die forming, and surface alterations including image transfer.  Whether your nicho serves to enlighten, satirize or amuse it is sure to produce good karma.

Materials to Bring:

1.     Tin cans, bottle caps, old lunch boxes, cookie tins, etc with images, colors and text painted on the can.   *tip, if you are not sure that it is tin, take a small magnet and touch it to the can, if it sticks, it is indeed a tin can.

Sources: flea markets, Good Will, Salvation Army, antique stores, and ethnic groceries are great places to look for cans.   However, www.EBAY.com  is the instructor's favorite place to shop (search on tin cans, vintage tin cans, tobacco tins, etc. and you will find lots of colorful and interesting cans).

2.     Other found objects you would like to incorporate into your work.

3.    You may wish to bring 20 gauge copper and/or sterling silver plate and/or wire if you would like to incorporate it in your work

Tools to Bring:

  • Tin snips
  • Saw Frame
  • Bench pin
  • Steel bench block
  • Needle file set
  • Small ball peen or chasing hammer
  • Large 1/2 round file
  • Center punch
  • Chain nose pliers
  • End Cutters
  • 6" Metal ruler
  • Dividers
  • Fine point Sharpie marker
  • Rubber Cement
Tuition: $140
Supplies:  The instructor will have some materials available for sale during the workshop.  Tool kits will be available to rent for $20 (payable to instructor at workshop).  Please indicate if you need a tool kit at time of registration.

Metals/Jewelry
W/Tim Lazure
Saturday & Sunday, August 15th & 16th, 2009
9:00am-4:00pm

Adorning the finger has been a tradition for ages.  Rings are loaded with historical meaning.  They can symbolize love /marriages, evoke nostalgia, embody authority or status, and portray accomplishments or affiliations. They can me made for everyday use or for special events. They can be understated or fancifully flamboyant.

This class will explore jewelry design, fabrication, stone setting, and assembling techniques that are related to the ring concept.  Aesthetic value of jewelry comes from the artist’s imagination and execution rather than from the size of the stone or the value of the metal.  We will fashion rings of personal importance, expression, and adornment.  The class will center around lecture and demonstration with plenty of time for individual attention.  We will attempt to create jewelry that is unpredictable, honest, visually complex, bold confident, simple and beautiful.  This workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate metal smiths.

Suggested Tools:
  • jewelers saws
  • files
  • sandpaper (wet/dry 220, 400, 600 grit)
(The instructor will be bringing some tools to share)

  • fun, small, found objects like antique buttons or coins, washers, anything you might find intriguing to set in a ring...
