Resident Artist
Caitlin Cartwright
Hosts Classes for Adults and Children
Caitlin Cartwright is an
accomplished
artist and brings a wealth of knowledge and creativity to Pocosin Arts.
After
graduating with a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art, Caitlin
moved to
Madagascar and worked in an orphanage with young women to produce arts
and
develop sustainable businesses. She also taught art, English, and
spear-headed
a mural project while there. After returning to the United States,
Caitlin
continued to paint and began working with inner city youth development.
In 2008
she joined the U.S. Peace Corps and traveled to Namibia, Africa, where
she
co-founded Nambula Girls Club, an organization focused on girls'
empowerment,
education and health. After returning from Namibia, Caitlin refocused
on her
painting and joined Pocosin Arts in October 2011.

Back By Popular Demand - February
3, 4 & 5, 2012
Pocosin Portraits: Nature Photography in the Land of Swans & Bears
Learn how to improve your
nature
photography skills in a landscape rich in wildness and wildlife –
Pocosin Lakes
and Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuges. Lake Mattamuskeet is
renowned
as a winter waterfowl haven and Pocosin Lakes has been called the
“Yellowstone
of the East” for its abundance of wildlife from thousands of
overwintering
tundra swans and snow geese to black bears and red wolves. Our time in
the
field will give you tips on where to go and what to do to see and
photograph
wildlife, natural landscapes and macro photography subjects.
This
workshop
is designed for beginning to intermediate level photographers. For
nature photographers,
the ideal learning environment is in the field and this workshop will
have
early morning and late afternoon field trips along with classroom tips
and
critique sessions.
We all know the
feeling of carrying a camera to try to capture an experience to share
it with
others. Learn tips and techniques – about your camera, your image
processing,
your subjects, and your observation skills – that will help you
produce images
that tell the story of natural habitats and your experiences in them.
Your
instructors
have years of field and photography experience in this subject-rich
area and
together they will provide you with an unforgettable photographic
experience in
one of the most spectacular natural settings on the East Coast.
Tuition
for this three-day workshop is only $235. The optional meal plan is $40
and includes 2 breakfasts, 1 dinner and 1 lunch. A vegetarian option is
also available. Lodging is available with special rates at The
Brickhouse Inn (252-766-3333) and
the Dalton House Inn (252-796-0381), both in Columbia, NC.
Please note that weather in this area can be quite variable.
The workshop will proceed except in the case of severe weather
(prolonged hard, driving rains or ice and snow, which make driving
conditions hazardous). If severe weather is predicted, the instructors
reserve the right to cancel the workshop with notifications to
participants no later than Thursday, February 2, 2012, and participants
will recieve a full refund. After that date, the workshop will proceed
and no refunds will be offered.
Student Supplies:
- SLR’s (digital cameras
with interchangeable lenses) are preferred with wide angle, macro, and
telephoto lenses; tripod and flash recommended.
- Digital pocket (point and
shoot) cameras with manual controls and at least a 5X zoom are also
acceptable. This is a good opportunity to learn how to use your new
holiday camera!
- A recommended list of
clothing for field conditions will be provided to students prior to the
course, but be prepared for cold and variable weather.
- Car-pooling to the field
sites using willing participant vehicles may be necessary depending on
enrollment.
Contact Pocosin Arts for more information
or to register for this workshop by calling (252) 796-2787.
