November
13th & 14th, 2010
During the
Annual Wings
over Water Wildlife Festival: A Celebration of Wildlife and Wildlands
in Eastern North Carolina, Pocosin Arts hosts the couple, painter
Anthony Ulinski and writer Kim Church to lead workshops to respond to
the landscape, invoke creativity, and spread your wings! |
Painting with Knives:
Cold Wax and Oil Paints on Panel
w/Anthony
Ulinski
Saturday and
Sunday
November 13th & 14th, 2010
Participants will use a mix of cold wax
(a solvent soften mixture of natural, synthetic and fossil waxes) with
oil paint and apply with an assortment of palette and painting
knives. With demos, one to one discussions and group
discussions the class will explore the possibilities of an impasto
surfaces and carving back through the built up layers. This medium with
its heavy textural qualities encourages us to translate and transform
our subject whether it is the low country salt marshes or studio still
lifes. For all levels.
Class supply list:
- One pint
of cold wax medium (preferably Gamblin).
- Several
gessoed ridged panels, a good grade of 1/2 plywood works fine for
paintings under 20” x 20”. A heavy canvas is
appropriate for larger pieces (then a gel medium is used to keep the
paint from cracking). Bring several so you can work on others while the
first coats dry.
- Gel
medium (for canvas). They are all more or less the same.
- Palette
knives. Anthony prefers a 1 1/2" long trowel shaped knife but
they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. A metal blade is best.
- Anthony
recommends buying the best paint you can afford. (There are qualitative differences
between paint grades. “Student grades” are cheaper and are
not as highly saturated with pigment. You won’t get the
intensity of color as you will with an “artist grade”.
There
are many good brands of oil paints. Anthony uses Holbein and
Williamsburg but you may like the thicker consistency of other top
brands such as Amsterdam. Many pigments are toxic. Some synthetic
colors are safer.) Anthony uses the following colors: Cadmium yellow, Cadmium yellow deep, Naples yellow, Cadmium orange, Cad red medium, Alizarine crimson, Yellow ochre, Raw sienna, Burnt sienna*, Raw umber*, Burnt umber, Asphaltum*, Sap green, Cerulean blue, Cobalt blue, Ultramarine blue, Indigo*, Titanium white (big tube), Ivory white* ( * not essential, )
The instructor will have for sale: panels
and knives and cold wax.
Tuition: $150
Anthony Ulinski has exhibited widely in
museums and
galleries, including the John Elder Gallery in New York, Funeria in San
Francisco, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in
Winston-Salem, North
Carolina, the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Arts in Greensboro,
and Blue
Spiral Gallery in Asheville. His work
has been included in the Smithsonian Craft Show and the Philadelphia
Museum of
Art Craft Show. He is an exhibiting
member of Artspace in Raleigh, where he was the summer 2000
artist-in-residence. He has received
fellowships from Vermont
Studio Center and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
He
divides his time between the painting studio and the
wood shop.

Fights of Fancy: A
Weekend of Wild Writing
w/Kim
Church
November
13th & 14th, 2010
9:00am-5:00pm Saturday, 9:00am-1:00pm Sunday
Saturday Evening: Optional Reading/Gathering
Join us for a weekend of writing, reading,
and fellowship in beautiful Columbia, North Carolina, on the Scuppernong River.
This workshop is for those who want to liberate their imaginations and
liven up their language. Everyone is welcome, from those who have
never tried writing and want a safe, fun way to start, to seasoned
writers looking to generate fresh ideas and spread their wings.
What we’ll do:
- Write to prompts. We’ll create new material
using exercises inspired by Natalie Goldberg (Writing Down the Bones, Wild Mind). These exercises
help turn off the inner critic and let out sometimes unexpected stories.
- Share and shape. We’ll share new work and use
feedback from the group to help with revision.
- Talk about craft. We’ll look at the art and
craft of story making – how to shape a story, build a scene,
create character, and use dialogue, viewpoint, and sensory detail.
- Read. Everyone is invited to bring an excerpt from a
work in progress to share.
Come for inspiration,
information, ideas, or just plain fun.
Tuition: $125
Kim Church’s stories
have appeared in many literary journals and anthologies, including Flash Fiction Forward (W.W. Norton) and The Great Books Foundation Short Story
Omnibus. She is a recipient
of fiction fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council, The
Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Vermont Studio
Center. She lives in Raleigh and likes traveling
to eastern North Carolina to free up her

Tool Making
W/Tim Lazure
Saturday & Sunday, April 24th & 25th, 2010
As metalsmiths and
artists we encounter many
situations where the need for a perfect tool is essential. Often times,
the
tools we have just don’t do the job right, or that perfect tool
for the job
just doesn’t seem to exist. In this
workshop,
we will begin to learn either how to fashion tools or improve or
customize
existing tools. Tim Lazure will cover how to make a variety of tools
for addressing
your creative endeavors, including chasing tools, scribes, center
punches,
stone setting tools, scrapers, in addition to a few others. Tim will also talk about the ergonomics of a
studio environment, and its importance as it relates to efficiency and
functionality when working with tools and material.
Tuition: $140
Tim Lazure
is an assistant professor in the Metals Design program at
East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. He received his BFA at
Rochester Institute of Technology and his MFA at the University of
Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Tim shows his work internationally and has
pieces in the permanent collections of
the Mint Museum of Craft and Design in Charlotte, NC, and in the
Gallery of Art and Design in Raleigh, NC. His work includes jewelry,
silversmithing and furniture.

Plants After the Fire
W/Botanists Charles & Marilyn Racine
& Pocosin
Arts Drawing Instructor, Hilary Anderson
Saturday, April 10, 2010
The
workshop is offered in Partnership with Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife
Refuge. A union of disciplines, this
workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn about the plants of the
pocosin
landscape through botanical observations and artistic interpretations. Charles and Marilyn Racine will specifically
discuss the response of the native plant communities on the refuge to
the
massive wildfire of 2008. The wildfire
spread over 40,000 acres with the dry deep peat as fuel.
Fires of this magnitude have probably become
more likely in recent years due to a lower water table because of
ditching and
draining, significant drought in years leading up to the fire, and long
intervals between fires causing an increase in natural fuels. In efforts to reduce the risks of massive
wildfires such as the one of 2008, on Pocosin Lakes NWR water control
structures are installed to raise the water table and a fire management
crew
routinely does prescribed burns. Native
plants and animals of this region are adapted to fire and many could
not
survive without some fire. Charles and
Marilyn Racine are interested in whether the deep massive fires had a
negative
impact on certain plant species. Workshop
participants will get to observe the
remains of the fire and learn
about the plants that have emerged since. They
will also have the opportunity to draw the
plants under guidance by
Pocosin Arts Drawing Instructor, Hilary Anderson. Participants
will learn
techniques to observe plant structures and translate what is seen onto
paper.
Hilary will demonstrate drawing and illustration techniques
through a
variety of media including charcoal, graphite, pastel and watercolor.
Cost: $30
Bring your own sketchbook and preferred materials.
Basic drawing materials will be also be available through Pocosin
Arts.
Car-pooling
to the field sites using willing
participant vehicles may be necessary depending on enrollment. |

Charles Racine was
trained as a Botanist at Duke, receiving his Ph.D in 1969. He
taught botany and ecology at Ohio State and NC State and worked as and
ecologist in Alaska for 30 years where he studied tundra fires.
Marilyn Racine received a MS degree in Botany at NC State and
worked with Charles in Alaska. They now reside in Edenton,
North Carolina and are working on a book about the garden history of
Edenton.
Hilary Anderson teaches drawing classes at Pocosin Arts Folk
School. She obtained her BA in Studio Art from Knox College with
a focus on painting and drawing. She since has studied scientific
illustration at the Highlands Biological Field Station. |

the world
shrines are made to hold sacred images and objects.
In Latin America nichos
are a special type of shrine, often made using recycled tin, to exhibit
a
diverse range of objects and images including popular cultural icons.
We will
alter and use tin containers as a foundation from which to create our
own
unique nichos, along with removable,

amuse it is sure to produce good karma.
Materials to Bring:
1.
Tin
cans, bottle caps, old lunch boxes, cookie tins, etc with images,

can, if it
sticks, it is indeed a tin can.
Sources:
flea markets, Good Will,
Salvation Army, antique stores, and ethnic groceries are great places
to look for
cans. However, www.EBAY.com is
the instructor's favorite place to shop (search on tin
cans, vintage tin cans, tobacco tins, etc. and you
will find lots of colorful and interesting cans).
2.

Rings, Rings, Rings
Metals/Jewelry
W/Tim Lazure
Saturday & Sunday, August 15th & 16th, 2009
9:00am-4:00pm
Adorning
the finger has
been a tradition for ages. Rings are
loaded with historical meaning. They
can symbolize love /marriages, evoke nostalgia, embody authority or

use or
for special events. They can be understated or fancifully flamboyant.
This
class will
explore jewelry design, fabrication, stone setting, and assembling
techniques
that are related to the ring concept. Aesthetic
value of jewelry comes from the
artist’s imagination and
execution rather than from the size of the stone or the value of the
metal. We will fashion rings of
personal importance, expression, and adornment. The
class will center around lecture and demonstration with plenty
of time for individual attention. We
will attempt to create jewelry that is unpredictable, honest, visually
complex,
bold confident, simple and beautiful. This
workshop is designed for beginner to
intermediate metal smiths.
Suggested Tools:
- jewelers saws
- files
- sandpaper (wet/dry 220, 400, 600 grit)
(The instructor will be bringing some tools to share)

- fun, small, found objects like antique buttons or
coins, washers, anything you might find intriguing to set in a ring...
